Old Vines Foch: Rugged Comfort
If you're already among those who revel in this wine, all you really want to know is that our 2005 vintage is now available. So, if you wish without further reading to arrow down to "Ordering" or look for the keys to your vehicle, we understand. If you're among the curious, read on... This is a vintage for those who love this wine for its assertive characteristics. It's the offspring of a vineyard planted in the mid-1970s. The deep roots and lower vigour of these older vines contribute to the growth of small quantities of richly flavoured grapes; flavours that were intensified by the hot summer of 2005. Dark and brooding in the glass, the wine displays dried currant, tobacco, leather, whetstone and vanilla on the nose. Smoke and mineral flavours in your mouth open to an intense, mouth-filling display of plum preserve, sultana raisin and hazelnut. The finish will intrigue you; is that chili pepper, bacon or a little of both? This is the wine you will run to when you need something that will not cower from boldly flavoured meats and vegetables. Martin has enjoyed this wine with beef short ribs, osso bucco, sharp cheese, and earthy vegetables. For more technical details, click here to view our winemaker's notes and other information. |

2005 Beamsville Bench Chardonnay
A chardonnay in the trademark Malivoire style. Last year's generous heat and sunshine combined with a dramatically lower yield to produce ripe fruit with concentrated flavours. Offers honeysuckle, cinnamon and vanilla on the nose. The palate is creamy and nutty with flavours suggesting peach, dates, custard and Danish pastry. Like our recently-released 2005 Pinot Gris, this wine bears VQA Ontario's new "Beamsville Bench" sub-appellation for the area in which we raised the grapes. This wine can enhance your enjoyment of a variety of foods with distinctive flavours. Lobster, splake, sable fish, fruit-infused roasted pork, poultry or pasta with white sauce, and mild cheeses are cheerful companions. The '06 is in!
We understand that at this time of the year the families of our winemakers and vineyard keepers scan this space for news of their loved ones. Be assured that they are weary but well and look forward to seeing you again. All right, that's a slight exaggeration but the harvest nearing completion has been a labour-intensive one. Altogether 190 tonnes of grapes have been harvested for crush, almost doubling last year's yield. All that remains on the vine is what we've netted for late harvest and icewine. Winemaker Shiraz Mottiar has evaluated his first tank and barrel samples and says the 2006 Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir are showing early promise. |
