CELEBRATING OUR 10TH VINTAGE

This spring we mark a milestone; the tenth anniversary of the bottling of our inaugural wine.

Our 1997 Gewürztraminer Icewine filled only forty cases, but three awards, including Gold at the 1999 International Wine and Spirit Competition, heralded an auspicious debut for Malivoire.

In honour of this occasion, during the first weekend of the 2008 Niagara Icewine Festival (January 19 and 20th), we will be offering some of our vintage icewines for sale in our Wine Shop. These wines have been set aside in the winery library for just such an occasion and will be available for this very limited time.

As a member of our email list, you have the opportunity to purchase these wines ahead of that weekend by calling Jean at the winery 1-866-644-2244.

THE CHANGING OF THE CHARD

Our 2006 Estate Chardonnay has succeeded its 2005 forerunner . Comparing the two, the differences between vintages are intriguing. The tangier aromas, suggesting grapefruit and baked apple, lead to a texture that, in spite of a more liberal use of oak, is surprisingly direct. Pear, orange and vanilla support the flavour collage.

THANK YOU

For those hardy souls who spent the latter part of January 2, 2008 with us in the vineyard harvesting the Cabernet Franc grapes for our next icewine vintage, we extend our heartfelt thanks. With your help, we finished the icewine harvest for this year.

WINTER "SLUMBER"

With the Holiday Season behind us, the winery has entered what appears to be a more tranquil time of the year. The key word is “appears”. The casual eye sees vineyards slumbering under snow and elsewhere around the winery, a slower pace of activity than during the adrenalin-charged “crush” period just a few months ago.

The reality is that our activities now are mainly unfolding behind the scenes. Beyond the visitor’s sight, thousands of hectolitres of wine are nearing readiness to bottle. Winemaker Shiraz Mottiar is directing the primary blendings of 2006 Moira Vineyard Chardonnay, Estate Pinot Noir and both Estate and Courtney Gamay. Also on the runway are the Melon and Chardonnay Musqué which will form the leading edge of our spectacular 2007 vintage.

Soon comes final blending. Knowing by now the individual characteristics of every tank and barrel of a given wine, our winemakers choose how much from each will be required to create the desired final product.
