2009 Guilty Men Sauvignon Blanc

VQA

A first from Malivoire, discovered while sampling chardonnay grapes at a potential new source farm in Niagara, the sauvignon blanc grapes in the next rows over were too good to pass up. Harvested over a few dates in the first week of November, the brix reached up to an astonishing 24, with ample acidity of 10.2 g/l and a pH of 3.3. Extended lees contact for one week prior to fermentation was used to enhance varietal characteristics. Fermented in stainless steel during which the acids dropped to 8.3g/l (no malo-lactic fermentation occurred) and pH remained the same. The wine was bottled in June of 2010 with 12.5% alcohol. Drink from 2010 to 2013.

2008 Mottiar Chardonnay

VQA

From the Mottiar Family Vineyard, situated on the upper slopes of the Beamsville Bench off Quarry Road. Abandoned for more than a decade, the farm was purchased by Malivoire Winemaker Shiraz Mottiar in 2003. One hectare was replanted to Chardonnay, using four Dijon clones. At an elevation 30-45m higher than Malivoire’s estate vineyard, this site promises distinct terroir, as the soils rest on different layers of Niagara Escarpment limestone and sandstone. The 2008 vintage offers aromas of asian pear, baked apple, lemon zest, clementine and smoky caramel. Rich but agile on the palate with tropical island flavours of pineapple, banana and cocoanut underscored by buttery vanilla, it displays the trademark minerality of its fruit’s birthplace.

2009 Pinot Gris

VQA

Like the great waves of European immigrants that came to Canada and thrived to become "uniquely" Canadian, this Malivoire Pinot Gris has truly landed. Its palate is now neither Italian nor French, but carries with it the crisp flavours and aromas of Niagara's stone fruits, and owes much of its charm to the ancient bedrock and minerals of the Escarpment.
