2008 ONTARIO WINE AWARD - GOLD MEDAL
Your nose finds rosewater, mandarin orange and lychee. The palate, underlined by tannins and supple acidity, is lively, full and elegant, combining flavours of grapefruit, apricot and ginger.
Winemaker's Notes:
From our own Estate vineyard, these vines, planted in 1999 and 2000 were propagated from select plants out of our old gewürztraminer block in the Moira vineyard. Although an extremely warm season, the weather during harvest was cool, helping to develop intense aromas and flavours.
Hand harvested between October 23rd and 30th, then further sorted prior to destemming, the fruit averaged 22.7° brix, 6.8g/l titratable acidity and 3.6 pH. The grapes were chilled and left to soak on their skins for an average of 42 hours to further extract aromas and flavours before pressing. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, the finished wine has 8 g/l residual sugar. Bottled April 23, 2007 under a Stelvin® closure. Drink now until 2009.
Food Pairings:
Try with a slow-roasted, fruit-stuffed roast of pork. Great with lobster bisque, white pizza, and washed rind cheeses.
Wine Reviews:
"Light golden, oily. Bouquet of spicy mangosteen, lychee, star anise, rose petals and mandarine peel with underlaying Beamsville minerality. Medium bodied, flavoursome with good enough acidity and a soft wild ginger after taste. Vietnamese crispy crab and pork spring roll with ginger dipping sauce." - Zoltan Szabo
“Deep golden colour; with a nose of roses and lychee nuts; spicy, exotic, rich and mouth-filling with just the right tension between fruit and acidity. The best Ontario Gewürz of this vintage that I've tasted. ****½”. Tony Aspler
“For late Sunday afternoon sipping I highly recommend Malivoire’s slightly sweet and seductive 06 Gewurztraminer”. Billy Munnelly
